Botox

Dr. Wilmeth administered his first Botox injection in 1985, shortly after it became available.  We have been using it continuously since then and have done many thousands of injections for medical and cosmetic purposes.  Botox is derived from botulinum toxin which causes muscle paralysis.  Brand name Botox (the only type we use) is carefully prepared to have just the right amount of potency and is used to relax facial or other muscles in a controlled way.  It is quite safe when used properly; Dr. Wilmeth has even used Botox in babies less than one year old.  Botox is a geat way to relax the muscles in the face which are a major cause of wrinkles.  It is also used for relief of muscle spasms for medical purposes such as for blepharospasm (involuntary closing of the eyelids) or torticollis (neck muscle spasm causing unwanted head turning).

Botox takes about ten days to reach maximum effectiveness and can be expected to last three to six months.  It is very effective at softening wrinkles.  It can be used in conjuction with intradermal injections such as Restylane or Juvederm for deeper wrinkles and can also be combined with Thermage.

Patients are cautioned to beware of cheap Botox.  If the price is very low you could be getting  an off-brand product or  more highly diluted  solution which  will be less effective  and shorter in duration.  We use only name brand Botox at  Medicus.
